For
more than 100 years, the quiet beauty of the Dunsmuir Estate
has remained hidden in the Oakland Hills. For those who
long for a time gone by, the stately mansion, rustic carriage
house and surrounding landscape provide a glimpse of the
grace and elegance of life at the beginning of the twentieth
century. The fifty-acre estate represents a past filled
with idyllic summer afternoons perfect for sipping tea on
the veranda sweetened with the laughter of children echoing
in the distant tree-lined meadows. Many warm evenings, painted
by the glow of a Tiffany dome, found the mansion filled
with the rustle of silk gowns and the excitement of a festive
social gathering.
Dunsmuir's history is invaluable and, for the moment, this
hidden jewel continues to flourish in the middle of a growing
urban and suburban community. This estate must be nurtured
and preserved for future generations to maintain a connection
to their past. Funding for the restoration and maintenance
of the Dunsmuir Historic Estate depends, in large part,
on your support.
By donating time or money or by
becoming a valued member of
Dunsmuir, you will help preserve this historic landmark
for many years to come.

Volunteering
Dunsmuir
depends on the active support of a large corps of volunteers
and docents. In addition to the Board of Trustees and Dunsmuir
Volunteer Management Council (DVMC), volunteers provide
services including professional expertise in landscape architecture,
architectural and interior design, business support, collections
management and appraisal as well as decorating, docenting,
gardening, housekeeping and ticket-taking.
Dunsmuir's mansion and gardens are very busy places throughout
the year with the annual tour season and many major public
events, including Family Sundays, the Old-Fashioned Easter
Celebration, the Oakland Scottish Games, concerts and Christmas
at Dunsmuir. Volunteers do the planning, the decorating,
hosting and just about anything that needs to be done. It
is work, of course, but as one
becomes better acquainted with the individuals who serve,
it soon becomes
very enjoyable and fun. In a sense, the volunteers strive
to fill in for the large staff and family members who once
made Dunsmuir the counterpart of other large country estates
in California and across the nation.
